The new standard of the miniature schnauzer (Zwergschnauzer)

The FCI Standard N° 183//MINIATURE SCHNAUZER  (Zwergschnauzer)

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Germany

DATE OF PUBLICATION OF THE ORIGINAL VALID STANDARD : 06.04.2000

EMPLOYMENT: House and companion dog.

FCI CLASSIFICATION : Group 2  pinscher and schnauzer, molossoid breed, Swiss Mountain.

Section 1 Dogs of type pinscher and schnauzer.

Not subordinate to job test.

GENERAL ASPECT :

Small, sturdy, more compact than slim,  rough coat, distinguished. It is a reduced image of the Schnauzer without the drawback of a dwarfed appearance.

IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS :

Of square construction,  it means that  the height at the withers is nearly equal to the body length.

The total length of the head (measured from the tip of the nose to the occipital crest  them) corresponds to the half of the back length  (measured from the whiters to the attack of the tail).

BEHAVIOUR/TEMPERAMENT :

Its attitude is similar to that  of the Schnauzer even if it is characterized from a temperament and behavior typical of a small dog . Intelligence, recklessness, endurance and alertness make the miniature schnauzer (Zwergschnauzer) a pleasant house dog , beyond a keeper and a companion which can live without problems also in a house of small dimensions.

HEAD

REGION OF THE SKULL

Skull: the skull is strong and lengthened with occiput no marking. The head must be in harmony with the size of the dog. The frontal bone is flat with very stiff skin, the forehead horizontal line must be parallel to the superio line of the  snout like in the image "a". In "b" we are  in a situation of divergence of parallelisms, while in the fig. "c" there is a convergence of parallelisms. Obviously the situations represented in "b" and "c" constitute a defect.

Stop:  the stop it is very marked and with the aid of the brow it appears very obvious.

REGION OF THE SNOUT

Nose: well developed always black with nostrils very opened.

Snout: it finishes in a  cone log, the advanced line is rectilinear.

Lips: black, very adherent and flat against the jaws, the corners of lips is closed.

Teeth: solid upper and lower jaw, strong scissor closing. They are considers disqualification defects the prognatism and the enognatism, while the closing to pincer is considered only defect. The set of teeth must be complete with 42 strong white teeth, and respect the dental formula of the dog. The chewing muscle is very developed but not so much  to make appear the cheeks too much in relief. The cheeks must not interfere with the rectangular aspect of the head, with the aid of the beard.

Eyes: of medium largeness and shape oval inserted in semilateral position and the most darkest is possible  with an alive expression. The eyelids are very adherent to the ocular globe. Here is described the table of eyes color:

                                         Correct colors

                                      Acceptable colors

                                   Serious defect

Ears: natural ears are refolded and pendants attacked high on the head to turned upside down "V" shape, are brought in symmetrical way and revolts in front (when the dog is in attention) in zygomas direction, the ears inner edge is adherent to cheeks. The junction does not be too much hight in the skull line (fig. b) or to be too low (fig. c). Consequently the junctions must be like in the image "a".

NECK

The neck is  harmoniously melted in the whiters and is connected with the nape by a strongly musculature. In harmony with the rest of the body the neck is solidly inserted, slim and nobly curved. The throat skin is very stiff and without folds.

BODY

Dorsal line: the dorsal line is slightly descendant from the withers towards rear.

Whiters: it represents the higher point of the dorsal line.

Back: strongly, short and taut.

Loins: short, solid and deep. The distance between the last rib to the hip is  much short to make the dog appear compact.

Rump: it is imperceptibly melted  with the tail junction and is slightly rounded.

Chest: of moderated width, the trasversal section is oval and reaching to the elbows. The forechest is distinctly marked by the point of the sternum.

Inferior line and belly: bellt is moderately retract and joining with the inferior part of   the thorax  it designs a beautiful curved line.

Tail: natural and correctly brought.

Correct tail                                                 acceptable Tail                                           Tail not corrected

LIMBS

Da qui

FOREQUARTERS: Seen from the front, the front legs are strong, straight and not close together. Seen from the side, the forearms are straight. When seen from the front the legs converge to the outside we have a situation defined "mancinism", if the legs converge  to the inside we have "vaccinism" and in both cases draft about defects.

                                   Corrected                Mancinism             Vaccinism

Shoulder: the shoulder is decidedly adherent to the wall of the thorax, rather sinewy exceeds in height the spiny apophyses of the thoracic vertebrae. It must be  most angled possible and very inserted, the angle that form with the horizontal is of approximately 50°.

Arm: very adherent to the body, solid and muscled  shape with the shoulder an angle between 95° and the 105°.

Corrected                   Too much straight               Too much angled

Elbow: very adherent, without deviations neither  outside or inside.

Forearm: seen from every side is absolutely straight,  strongly developed and with very obvious musculature.

Carpal joint: solid, firm, barely standing out against the structure of the forearm.

Pastern: seen from the front must be vertical, in the lateral profile a light inclination is present, must be solid and muscular and slightly springy.

Forefeet: short and round, the toes well-knit and arched (cat foot), the plantar pads are strong and black,  the nails are strong and dark.

                                            Corrected                              not corrected

POSTERIOR LIMBS: seen from profile  the hindquarters are tilt but not much extended. Tracing a vertical line from the gluteus to the ground, this must be met with the tip of the foot in this case we have corrected posterior angles. Seen from the rear the hindquarters are parallels and not not close together.

                     Corrected                               not corrected                           not corrected

Thigh: of medium length, wide and strongly muscled.

Stifle: well direct, never turned towards the inside or the outside.

                                                                 Corrected         not corrected       not corrected

Leg: long, strong and sinewy, jointed whit the hock, which must be strong.

Hock: very well angulated, strong, firm, never turned towards the inside or the outside.

Metatarsus: short and perpendicular to the ground.

Hind feet: short toes, arched and well-knit; the nails are short and of dark color.

MOVEMENT

Melted, elegant, agile, free and wide. The forelegs extending most possible in ahead, the hind legs supply  the necessary push for a long and elastic falcate. The front limb of one side, and the hind leg, from the opposite side move forward at the same time. The back, the ligaments and the joints are firm.

SKIN

Very adherent on all the body.

COAT

Hair: the hair must be hard (therefore be said iron thread) and very driven, the coat is formed by an a driven undercoat and by acoat of cover (sufficiently long to be able to estimate the quality) hard and very adherent, it must not be neither goffered and undulated. The hair on the limbs stretches to be less hard. The hair is normally shorter on the forehead and on the ears. The beard, not too much soft,  and the bushy eyebrows which slightly shade the eyes  are a typical characteristic of race.

Color:

  • Pure black with black undercoat

  • Pepper and Salt

  • Black silver

  • Pure white with white undercoat

When breeding  pepper and salt the aim is  to obtain a medium color with a "pepper" tonality well black pigmented and uniform, with gray undercoat. They are admitted  tonalities that  goes  from the dark gray (color of the iron) to  the silverplated gray. Independently from the tonality of the coat all "pepper and salt" schnauzer must have a darker mask that emphasizes the expression and that spouse harmoniously with the color of the subject. The presence of  clearly clear zones on the head, the chest, and  undesiderable.

For black silver colour, the aim in breeding is a black color of the hair associated to an undercoat of the same color and with white markings over the eyes, on the cheeks, at the beard, at the throat, in two divided triangles at the front of the chest, on the front pasterns, on the feet, on the inside of the hind legs and around the anus. The forehead, the neck and the external part of the ears are black.
